Ayurveda Recommended Food for Monsoon

Everyone loves rain. That amazing aroma of petrichor is unmatchable. The onset of monsoon bids goodbye to the scorching heat and that is yet another reason people adore this season. But apart from all of this, the monsoon is one such season where we need to take utmost care of our health.  There are a number of microbe-borne diseases one experiences due to the humid weather. Our ancient Ayurvedic scriptures and sages have also suggested that our body experiences dosha imbalance and it is extremely important to make some lifestyle changes. To pacify the doshas, it is also necessary that we consume food that is recommended for the monsoon season.

The Interrelation of Digestion and Monsoon

The biggest trouble one experiences during monsoon is related to gut and digestion. The humid weather disturbs the functioning of the stomach, intestines and pancreas. We also start binge-eating hot-piping snacks in such an atmosphere which worsens the problem.

It is mentioned in Ayurveda that all such problems occur because Vatta dosha is aggregated and the Pitta dosha accumulates. This aggravation of the Vatta causes acidity and also weakens our digestive system. This being the reason it is recommended that we should consume easily digestible food. 

Lifestyle Changes that are Recommended

  • Make sure your sleep cycle is well maintained. Avoid sleeping during the day as it might lower your metabolism.
  • Ensure that the surroundings are dry and clean.
  • You can use natural insect repellents like neem leaves during this season.
  • This season is also considered the best for Panchkarma. You can try practising it and use medicated ghee also in your routine.
  • Diabetic patients need to take utmost care of their feet and keep them dry.
  • People who experience body pain or are suffering from arthritis should avoid lying on the floor.  

Food to Consume During Monsoon

1. Mung Beans

  • Mung beans are a powerhouse of proteins, minerals and vitamins. This way it helps in enhancing your immunity during rains. This ingredient is well known to pacify the fire and air element of the body and due to it helps the body achieve the required temperament. Not only this, mung beans taste amazing and can be used to prepare everything; from salads, and sabzi to pancakes.

2. Turmeric

  • From enhancing your skin to helping with respiratory problems, turmeric has endless benefits. In monsoons when weather changes occur every once in a while, turmeric helps in getting rid of sore throat and cough. You can also add it to your green tea. Apart from that, you can gargle with a mixture of turmeric and hot water.

3. Honey

  • As we all know, honey is a powerhouse of antioxidants. It is also easily digestible and helps in aiding digestion during monsoon. Most people suffer from digestive issues during monsoons and honey is the best alternative during these times.

4. Ghee

  • Ayurvedic scriptures and practices revolve around ghee. This golden elixir is a boon to humankind. Monsoon is one season when people mostly face difficulty in digestion and constipation. Consuming half a spoon of ghee before your meal can help ease all your gut-related problems.

5. Ginger

  • Ginger is a well-known remedy for an upset stomach. It not only increases the secretion of saliva, bile and gastric juices but also fights inflammation. In a few households, it is also used as a remedy for heartburn. Ginger also keeps us energetic throughout the day and also protects us from cold and flu.

6. Sweet and Sour Fruits

  • During the monsoon season, it is important to consume fruits that keep you hydrated and are light on the stomach. That’s why one should switch to sweet and sour fruits like papayas, oranges, grapes and others. They all work well in pacifying the Vatta.

7. Garlic

  • A powerhouse of antioxidants, garlic is known to boost immunity. It also enhances our metabolism if consumed during monsoon. The best way to consume it is to include in dals, curries or sabzis due to its strong flavour. 

8. Mint

  • The one with the most refreshing and amazing flavour and aroma, mint leaves are loved by all. From cooling drinks and teas to salads, it tastes simply amazing with anything. These leaves if consumed during monsoon can help you fight cold, cough and flu by acting as a decongestant.
